best places to get hermit crab shells

    The best places to get hermit crab shells arent the hermit section in the pet store, usually when you get them there they dont fit right and are way over priced. Here are some other places to get they for cheaper prices and better value.

    If you need to get them at a pet store look in the aquarium section. There might be some bags of shells for people to put in there aquariums, but i like to use them for my hermies. I got 8 shells for them and clam shells for decoration too.
    When you go to florida its a really good place to find shells and get them for really cheap in most of the stores.
   craft stores usually have bags of shells for candle making and other reasons too.
   thrift stores are good places too if you look hard enough. one time i saw a big bag full of them and i saw a little carrier case that somebody used for hermit crabs and it had 3 shells in it.

    And REMEMBER always boil the shells for 5 minutes after buying.

signs of molting

if you think your hermit crab is going to molt please read!
signs
•it just moved into a smaller shell
•eating a lot
•sitting in both salt and fresh water for extended periods of time
•chalky exo skeleton and cloudy eyes
•and digging a lot
don't dig up the crab or the exo skeleton after or before the molt. and if your little hermie surface molts for any reason isolate it and its exoskeleton and if the other crabs ate the exo skeleton put some boiled egg shell in with the crab.

hermit crabs

 hermit crabs make really good pets as long as you treat them right. Think before you buy one, set up a complete crabitat before here are all of the things you need

        *a tank or terrarium at least 10 gallons
        *extra shells (non-painted)
        *2 shallow water bowls 1 for salt and 1 for fresh water
        *another shallow bowl or large clam shell
        *a little hut or somthing like it to hide in
        *stuff to climb on
        * 2 natural sea sponges to put in the water
        *and enough coco dirt or sand for them to dig and have at least an inch over them
they can also eat other things like
melon,apples,mangos,peanut butter,some kinds of baby food,carrots,rattish,unsweeted rasins and shaved coconut.

If your hermit crab is about the size of a golf ball its 8 to ten years old and if its about the size of a base ball its about 14 to 17 years old. And if treated properly hermit crabs can live to about 30 or more years.
